About this work
Sixteenth of September 1956 opens with a quiet painted field and a few solid forms placed without much overlap. The eye lands on the middle shape and then drifts across the empty ground.
Rene Magritte usually built pictures like this with flat colour and clear edges. A fine art print keeps that plain surface and the soft lines of the marks. The paper is matte, so the lighter tones do not shine under a lamp.
The frame finish can follow the room: a light frame on a dark wall, a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture. It works on a hallway wall beside a coat hook. From the stair you see the broad colour first, and then the small painted marks.
