About this work
Solar Skin - 1964 uses painted bands of colour that step across the sheet. The bands shift in hue from one side to the other in a steady direction.
Gene Davis built this image with flat colour stripes, a method he used throughout his colour field painting period. The fine art print keeps those colours steady on the paper, so each band reads without a shine under a lamp.
A light frame on a dark wall keeps the stripes clear, or a wood frame sits beside wooden furniture. It works on a hallway wall where you pass it each day. From the first step you notice the step of colours, and the bands hold their own width.
