About this work
The title Solare - 1962 points to a sun subject. Paint is scraped and wiped across the sheet, leaving patches of tone and a central bright shape. Mario Schifano worked with synthetic layers and quick changes in the sixties, often treating light as a sign rather than a scene.
This fine art print uses a matte paper that keeps the pale washes low in shine. A light frame sits against a dark wall, and a dark frame looks right on a pale wall. The wood frame joins the grain of nearby furniture without pulling attention away from the painted marks.
On a narrow landing wall the sun shape reads first, the scraped tones next. From the bottom step the image stays clear, while a hand on the rail brings the small shifts in the paint into view.
