About this work
Spectrum I - Minimalism by Robert Ryman uses a few bands of colour laid over a white field. The painted blocks sit close together and leave a thin gap between them. The work belongs to the minimal painting practice seen in post war american painting. You can see how the artist tests tone and edge on a plain ground.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The frame finish can follow the room, so a light frame sits on a dark wall or a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture. The matte surface keeps the colours steady without shine under a lamp.
It hangs in a stairwell where the steps meet the landing. From the first tread you notice the coloured bands and the white ground behind them.
