A winding path of earth and stone spirals upward. This is Spiral Hill, one of Robert Smithson's most intriguing land artworks. The spiral, a symbol found in nature and ancient cultures, draws the eye inward and upward, creating a sense of movement and mystery.
The artwork is a study in contrasts: the rough texture of the stones against the smooth curve of the spiral, the earthy browns of the dirt against the stark white of the sky. The spiral itself is composed of small rocks and soil, meticulously arranged to form a continuous line that coils inward, disappearing into the center.
