About this work
St. Germain - 1995 shows loose brushwork and broad colour passages that read clearly from a distance, then break up into smaller gestures when you stand near.
The surface feels open, with space between the painted shapes. Albert Irvin often worked this way, letting the paint stay visible and not smoothing it down.
The matte paper holds the lighter tones without shine, so the colours stay separate and the marks stay readable. Place the fine art print on a wall where daylight falls from the side, and the paint layer reads the same way it does in the studio. In a kitchen with white cabinets, the eye settles on the darker bands first, then catches the smaller strokes between them.
