About this work
A fruit bowl and a mandolin sit together on a table in Still Life with Fruit Bowl and Mandolin 1919. The picture builds the objects from flat colour planes and clear outlines, a method used by Juan Gris in his synthetic cubist work.
This fine art piece is printed on matte paper so the muted tones stay soft and there is no glare under a lamp. The frame finish can follow the room, a light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame beside wooden furniture. You see the planed surfaces without shine.
On the kitchen wall above the counter, the bowl and mandolin read as a calm still life at a short distance. The divided background stays quiet while the outlined shapes hold the eye. A morning light grazes the surface and leaves the tones even.
