About this work
Study for a Homage to the Square 1949 shows four nested rectangles in flat colour, each one sitting inside the next on the sheet. The bands move inward without blending. You look from the outer edge to the centre and the tones shift against each other.
The fine art print is on matte paper so the flat colour blocks stay even and there is no shine when the room light hits it. A light frame on a dark wall lets the outer square stand apart from the paint.
It hangs on the hall wall near the coat hooks, low enough that you pass it every day. From the stairs you see the nested squares, up close the paper grain shows under the ink.
