Syzygy, 1987- opens with a wide band of thin colour laid across a flat sheet. Helen Frankenthaler bends the stain into a slow turn.

The brush leaves a soft edge where the paint meets the paper. You can see the pressure change from one side to the other. A fine art print sits in a frame with a back panel, solid behind the thin colour.

The frame holds the sheet flat so the soak stays even. From a low seat across the room, the turn reads as one long mark. Up close, the small shifts in pressure show on the surface.
