About this work
Ten Colours 1966 by Gerhard Richter shows a square sheet with bands of paint laid in sequence. The marks stay flat and the colours sit one after another without blending.
Gerhard Richter built many works by layering paint in this slow way. The fine art paper keeps each band readable and the paint layer stays even.
A white frame gives the sheet a clean edge that cuts the colours apart on the wall. It suits a kitchen wall above the table with morning light. You see the colour blocks from the doorway and the smaller lines near the line where two bands meet.
