About this work
The Big Ear 1943 shows a painted shape balanced on a wire line, drawn from the idea behind an ear. The weight sits near the centre, and the rest of the sheet stays open. A fine art print keeps the painted tones soft, so the wire reads as a thin mark rather than a hard edge.
The paper is matte, so the light tones stay flat and there is no shine under a lamp. A dark frame on a pale wall gives the wire line a clear edge. The print hangs a little above eye level on the wall, where the open sheet has room to breathe.
It works well in a long kitchen, where the wire line reads across the room. You see the painted shape from the doorway, and the soft tone stays steady under the ceiling light.
