About this work
The Clown 1947 by Kurt Schwitters uses the collage and assemblage practice he is known for. You see arranged fragments of paper and small painted marks brought together in a loose composition. The work belongs to the dada movement print tradition, where everyday bits of material become part of the picture.
The fine art print is mounted in a white, wood, dark wood or black frame that gives the picture a clear edge on the wall. That clean border keeps the scattered elements of the image contained and lets the eye rest on the different papers and marks.
On a hallway wall picture, the different tones of the fragments stay clear in the morning light from the door. From the landing you notice the small cuts and overlaps before the larger shapes.
