About this work
The Façade, 1954- treats a built front as a flat pattern. Helen Frankenthaler turns the building into colour fields and open edges. The treatment points toward colour field painting. You see the structure without the depth.
This fine art print keeps the marks clear on a matte sheet. The finish lowers the shine so thin areas stay readable. A light frame on a dark wall makes the pale fields stand out. A dark frame on a pale wall does the same the other way.
It fits a blank wall beside a narrow window. The lamp across the room hits the sheet at an angle. From there the edge lines stay crisp and the washes stay soft. You read the front across the room, then step closer for the marks.
