The Gorge, Appledore

The Gorge, Appledore opens on a rocky channel with water moving through it. Green and grey tones meet along the stone edges, and the sky stays pale above the steep shapes.

Childe Hassam worked in the American impressionist style, using painted brush marks that follow the slope of the ground. The fine art paper keeps the soft tones from turning shiny under a lamp.

A light frame on a dark wall helps the stone shapes stand out, and the marks stay easy to see at shoulder height in a steady room. The print rests well on a hallway wall near the bend, where the eye catches the water line first and the rock faces second.
