About this work
The gully - 1928 shows a steep path cutting down through trees and a slope. Grace Cossington Smith used patchy paint and clear colour blocks to build the land.
You get the fine art print with a hanger already on the back. The work follows her work in Australian modernism, where paint is laid in separate shapes. The paper holds the paint without a shine, so the greens stay flat and the lines stay readable.
A light frame on a dark wall lets the pale ground carry the picture. On a narrow hallway wall near the front door, you see the path lead down and the paint edges hold their shape.
