About this work
The Harmonious Fagot Illustration for The Misfortunes of the Immortals by Max Ernst uses the frottage method to lift texture from a surface below the paper. Dark lines repeat over a pale ground, making ridges and grain show through. The marks look pressed in, not drawn on top.
This fine art print sits with the paper flat against a smooth backing, so the lifted texture stays even under room light. A light frame on a dark wall lets the pale ground stay soft, while a dark frame on a pale wall keeps the dark lines clear.
It hangs on the stairwell wall near the landing light. From the bottom step you see the repeated dark marks across the sheet, and from the top step the pale ground reads as a quiet field with pressed texture.
