About this work
A narrow passage through a stone arch leads the eye toward the old mill in The Little Gate of the Old Mill 1898. Matisse set the scene with clear outlines and a few quiet areas of tone. The print belongs to the fauvist period and follows that early way of working with flat colour and clear drawing.
The fine art print sits inside a frame with a white finish. That plain edge runs straight against the paper and gives the picture a firm line on the wall. The white frame keeps the painted gate from fading into the background.
You notice the arch first from the kitchen doorway, where the work hangs above the counter. The dark line of the gate reads clearly against the pale wall. From the table you see the small changes in tone across the stone.
