The Oak

A single oak tree stands in the middle of The Oak by Paul Cézanne. The trunk is painted in brown and green tones, with leaves built up in separate patches of colour. The tree fills most of the picture and the ground stays plain.

The fine art frame in white gives the picture a clean edge on the wall. The white finish keeps the brown trunk clear and does not pull the eye away from the tree.

It fits on the wall beside a tall bookshelf in a study. From the desk you see the trunk shape clearly, and the separate leaf patches show their own colour when the lamp is on.
