About this work
The Passage the Dead End shows a narrow street blocked at one end, built from rough paint and pale stone tones. Maurice Utrillo worked in thick layers of paint on canvas to turn quiet Paris streets into painted scenes. The house paint here sits in uneven patches, leaving the brick and plaster looking worn.
The fine art print comes ready to hang. The frame finish can follow the room: a light frame on a dark wall, a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture.
In a narrow hallway with wood floorboards, you pass the blank end of the street each morning. The blocked doorway reads as a quiet corner, and the uneven paint catches the light from the hall lamp at shoulder height.
