About this work
Henri Matisse painted a metal jug standing on a surface in The Pewter Jug 1917. The form sits plain against a flat ground. Strong outlines hold the shapes together, and the tones stay close to one another.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The print uses matte paper so the pale greys do not shine back at you. A light frame sits on a dark wall, a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture. The choice follows the room.
On a plain study wall at eye level you notice the steady line of the jug. From a seat across the room the shape reads first, then the quiet tones settle in.
