About this work
Tool Box 1 1966 shows a painted toolbox with hard edges and steady lettering. Jim Dine returns to this ordinary object again and again, turning it into a repeated theme. The work sits inside the artist repeated focus on tools and personal objects across his paintings and drawings.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The frame finish can follow the room around it. A light frame on a dark wall, a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture. That keeps the painted letters and tool shapes clear without a bright border pulling the eye away.
A tool shelf in a workshop wall holds the print above a workbench. From the bench you read the toolbox shape and the letters first, then the painted edges and the blank ground behind them.
