Townscape M5 1968

Townscape M5 1968 shows a row of buildings with soft edges against a muted ground. The shapes step back in thin layers, and the biggest block sits near the middle. Gerhard Richter keeps the picture even by leaving open space on both sides.

The fine art frame finishes in white, wood, dark wood or black and gives the painted buildings a clear border on the wall. A white finish keeps the grey tones calm and separates the built shapes from the wall. A dark finish makes the muted tones stand out more.

In a narrow hallway, you notice the broad blocks first and then the thin lines between them. The soft focus of Gerhard Richter moves slowly through the room as you pass.
