About this work
Water lies still in a shallow pond near Trivaux Pond 1917. Broad colour patches sit on the page with open paper around them. Henri Matisse worked in this way during his outdoor studies. You see the water first, then the soft edges of the bank. The scene stays quiet and the marks do not crowd the ground.
The fine art frame gives the sheet a clean line on the wall. A white finish lets the pale water tones hold their own without a strong border. A wood finish brings a warm line against the cool ground.
On a dining room wall the pond reads as a flat field of water. From the table you take in the broad washes, and from the doorway the open ground stays clear. The marks stay small until you stand near the wall.
