About this work
Untitled 14B - 1947 by Mark Rothko sets broad painted bands on the sheet. The upper field holds a warmer tone, the lower field sits darker and heavier. A thin strip of ground shows between them. The eye rests on the edge where the two tones meet.
This fine art print uses paper with a matte finish, so the painted bands stay flat under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall keeps the upper tone from fading into the background. A wood frame beside wooden furniture ties the lower band to the room.
It fits on the hallway wall beside the door. From the stairwell you notice the stacked tones first, then the thin ground line. The two bands read as one shape from that distance.
