About this work
Hans Hartung (1904–1989) was a German-French painter and one of the foremost figures of Art Informel and Tachisme — the European postwar movements focused on gestural, spontaneous mark-making as a direct expression of inner experience. Hartung's work is celebrated for its visceral energy: bold, sweeping strokes that seem to capture the act of painting itself frozen in time.
This early work from 1921 reveals Hartung even as a young artist already drawn to the expressive possibilities of abstracted form and energetic line. His early drawings and studies prefigure the dramatic gestural language he would develop fully after World War II, when his work gained international recognition and placed him alongside Wols, Mathieu, and other pioneers of European abstract painting.
The dynamic linear quality of this piece makes it particularly striking in modern and contemporary interiors — an ideal choice for collectors interested in the historical roots of abstraction and the intersection of drawing and painting.
Printed on museum-grade archival paper and set in a handcrafted wooden frame. Available in multiple sizes. Free shipping from Zephyeer.
