About this work
Untitled - 1951 by Edward Corbett uses broad black strokes laid over a warm ground. The paint is built in layers that leave ridges along the surface. He worked in abstract expressionism, letting each mark sit on the sheet without filling the space.
The print sits on matte fine art paper that does not shine under a ceiling light. The dark paint gathers flat against the sheet, so the ridges read as shallow texture rather than glare.
In a dining room the print hangs on a side wall above a narrow sideboard. From the table you see the big dark bands first, then the lighter ground around them. When you pass the room the shapes stay plain against the wall and do not pull the eye.
