About this work
Untitled - 1952 sets broad marks and soft washes against a plain ground. Alfred Manessier worked with free lines and layered colour in his post war abstract practice.
The image changes as you move. From a hallway corner the shapes read as one quiet field. Step closer and the thin lines and uneven edges show through.
The fine art print keeps the surface matte so the light tones stay soft under a lamp. A dark frame on a pale wall lets the pale ground hold its own space. It fits above the door in a study, where the broad strokes sit above your eye line and the small marks wait for a second look.
