About this work
Untitled - 1959 shows a pale ground with bands of colour laid across it. The hues sit beside each other without blending, so each tone stays clear against the next. Thomas Downing placed the edges with care, leaving the surface calm and the shapes separate.
The picture is a fine art print set in a white frame. The white edge separates the image from the wall and gives the colour bands a clean limit. The paper is matte, so the tones stay soft and the surface does not shine under a lamp.
In a dining room, the print hangs on the wall beside the table by the far window. From the chair you see the broad colour bands first, and the small shifts between them come through when you pass by.
