About this work
Untitled 1964 sits on a plain sheet with bands of tone laid side by side. The marks come from repeated passes of pigment over the same area. Gotthard Graubner built these fields by layering colour until the edges shift and the surface holds a quiet density.
You get the fine art print with a hanger already on the back. The print sits on matte paper so the tones stay even and the surface stays dull under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall lets the bands read without a bright border.
On a hallway wall the bands run along the plaster and catch the ceiling light at a low angle. From the landing you see the broad stretches of tone. From closer you notice where one band thins and the next picks up.
