About this work
Untitled - 1976 shows painted color bands running in one direction across the sheet. The hues shift at each band, so the eye follows the step from one side to the other. Gene Davis built the picture in the hard edge stripe painting method, with each color held separate.
The print arrives as a fine art piece in a frame with a white finish. The white frame edge sits against the painted bands and gives the picture a clear stop on the wall.
A single hanging light falls on the bands from the side over the kitchen counter. From the sink you see the color steps, and the white edge keeps each band in its own space.
