Untitled 1998 by Esteban Vicente reads as a quiet colour field with blocks of tone laid over a ground. From a doorway the picture holds together as a few wide bands of muted hue. Closer up the edges of each shape show a mix of paint and paper fibers.

The fine art print uses matte paper, so the light parts of the painting stay flat and do not shine under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall keeps the pale tones clear, while a dark frame on a pale wall makes the deeper bands stand out.

It fits a hallway wall between two doors, where you pass it every day. At that height the broad colour bands read as a calm stretch of surface. You notice the small shifts in tone more than any single shape.
