Untitled I L I 87 by Sam Francis opens on a wide pale field with colour spreads laid across it. The paint sits in open layers, leaving parts of the sheet bare. The eye rests in the middle before moving toward the edges. Large areas stay empty.

This is a fine art print on matte paper, so the light passages stay flat and the dark shapes do not shine. A light frame on a dark wall or a dark frame on a pale wall lets the room lead the look. The glass stays clear under a lamp.

It fits a narrow hallway wall between two doors, hung at shoulder height. From the far end of the hall you see the broad colour spreads, and as you walk past you notice the thin edges where one wash meets another.
