Untitled Number 5 by Agnes Martin uses pale pencil lines drawn across a quiet field of off white. The marks run close together in long horizontal rows, with small gaps between each stroke.

From the far corner of the room you see a soft grey field with no hard edges. Step nearer and the pencil lines become separate, each one a thin grey mark on the paper. The print follows the fine art tradition of Agnes Martin and keeps the pencil grid look.

The matte paper holds the faint greys without shine, so the lines stay even under a lamp. Hang it on a pale wall at a mid height where the light falls straight on the surface. In a study room against a side wall you notice the even rows first, then the tiny breaks between the strokes.
