Untitled SF218S

Loose colour washes spread across a wide white field in Untitled SF218S. The paint runs in thin layers and leaves gaps where the white ground shows through. Sam Francis built his abstract expressionist practice around open colour washing on a large scale.

The fine art print comes ready to hang. The paper is matte and the frame finish can follow the room. A light frame sits on a dark wall, a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture.

It works well on a long hallway wall above a narrow console. From the far end of the hall the big washes read as soft bands of colour. You notice the small gaps and thin edges when you stand closer to the picture.
