About this work
Variation 1916 shows a face built from repeated brush marks set against a soft ground. Small shifts in tone push the head forward without hard lines. The work sits in the expressionist practice of Alexej von Jawlensky, where the portrait becomes a study of colour and form.
The fine art print copies the surface with a matte finish, so the brush marks read without a shine under a lamp. A dark frame keeps the lighter tones clear on a pale wall, while a wood frame joins a wooden mantel naturally.
On a stairwell wall near the landing, the face catches the low light from one bulb. You see the repeated marks climbing the paper as you walk past each day.
