Venice — Fine Art

Venice by John Singer Sargent is a watercolour scene of the lagoon and its busy waterfront. Quick washes and thin brush lines build the shapes of boats, buildings and water. The artist worked outdoors and used transparent paint layers to catch the look of a day in the city.

This fine art print uses matte paper so the pale water tones stay flat and the darker boats read clearly. A light frame on a dark wall or a dark frame on a pale wall sets the picture off without competing with it.

On a bedroom wall near the bed the soft blues and greys keep the room calm in the morning. From the doorway you see the broad shapes of the water and the dark hulls of the boats.
