Where Necessary by Helen Frankenthaler (1977)

A streak of ochre bleeds into pale blue. Helen Frankenthaler’s *Where Necessary* begins here, at the raw edge of color meeting color. Acrylic soaks into unprimed canvas, leaving soft halos where cobalt and ochre dissolve into one another. The lower third holds a quiet pool of lavender, while the upper half lifts into a milky sky. No brushstrokes are visible, only the slow spread of pigment, as if the canvas drank the paint. Hang it above a low credenza where afternoon light can catch the subtle shifts in tone, turning the wall into a quiet conversation between colors.
