White Gothic No. 5 — Fine Art

White Gothic No. 5 shows a pale ground with a dark vertical form running through the centre. Richard Pousette-Dart built this kind of work with thin lines, small dots and layered paint. The marks cross one another and leave gaps of white showing through.

The fine art print sits on a matte sheet so the grey tones stay flat and the white spaces do not shine under a lamp. A dark frame on a pale wall keeps the central form easy to see. The frame finish can follow the room, so a wood frame beside wooden furniture keeps the look simple.

On a hallway wall near the stairs the viewer notices the dark form first, then the small cross marks when standing close. The pale ground stays calm against the darker steps behind it.
