About this work
Three broad fields of red, yellow, and blue sit on a white ground. A tall vertical band pulls the eye down through Whos Afraid of Red, Yellow, and Blue I. The paint looks flat, with no brush marks showing.
The fine art print comes ready to hang. Barnett Newman worked in colour field painting, laying wide areas of single tones against each other. The white frame gives the picture a clean edge on the wall. It keeps the borders sharp and lets the colour fields stand on their own.
The white trim does not pull attention away from the red and yellow fields. Hang it in a narrow hallway with a lamp near the ceiling. From the far end you see the vertical band first, then the three colour blocks fill the view.
