About this work
Window Shade No. 2, 1952- by Helen Frankenthaler shows a thin rectangular shape set near the top of the sheet. The rest of the surface stays open and quiet. A soft edge runs along the lower side of the shape, where the paint thins out.
This fine art print arrives ready to hang, with a metal hanger fixed to the back. It goes straight onto a nail or screw. The hanger keeps the print flat against the wall, so the thin line and the open field read the same way from across the room.
One nail in a plain hallway wall at eye level holds it steady. From there the rectangle sits above the empty field, and the soft lower edge looks like a shadow that fades out. You notice the open space before you notice the mark.
