The Sieve 1972 by Antoni Tapies

The Sieve 1972 shows a broad patch of matte ground with a few rough scraped lines and a dark patch near the middle. The title hints at a mesh pattern without drawing it plain. Antoni Tapies built his surfaces by hand, mixing paint with grit and smeared strokes.

This fine art print arrives ready to hang, with a metal hanger fitted to the back that goes straight onto a nail or screw. The matte paper keeps the scraped strokes soft, so they do not glare under a bare bulb.

On a narrow stair landing the big shapes read from the bottom step and the small pencil marks show only when you stand close. The metal hanger sits flat against the plaster and the print stays steady.
