About this work
G-1 - 1985 shows a field of colour built from loose paint strokes. The eye moves across the marks as they gather and thin out, leaving zones of open ground.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. Emil Schumacher worked in a loose abstract style with broad gestures on canvas. The white frame gives the picture a clear edge on the wall, so the painted shapes do not drift off the sheet.
The paper is matte, so the paint tones stay soft and there is no shine under a lamp. It sits on a dining room wall where the painted strokes stay readable from the table. You notice the gaps between marks when you reach for a plate.
