About this work
Emil Schumacher builds a busy surface with thin paint strokes and small scratches. Untitled EL X - 1966 stays close to that way of working, with layers that cross and leave gaps. The picture belongs to the postwar abstract painting period, where a painter lets the hand move across the sheet.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The frame keeps the image flat and the back panel adds a steady edge behind the paper. Fine art paper holds the soft mixes and the small scratches the way the picture needs.
The print fits a study corner with a single lamp. From the chair you notice the layered strokes first, and the small marks near the edge. On the wall beside a bookshelf the tones settle without drawing attention away from the books.
