About this work
No. 7 Dark Over Light - 1954 uses two stacked colour fields that stay close in tone. The upper field runs darker and the lower one sits lighter. Mark Rothko worked with broad painted shapes in this period of post war American abstraction. The method leaves the colour edges blurred rather than sharp.
This fine art print comes with a frame in white, wood, dark wood or black. The frame line gives the image a clear boundary on the wall. With this picture, a white frame keeps the darker upper field from reading too heavy.
In a kitchen, the two colour fields sit above the cooktop and the darker band holds the eye while the lighter band stays open. From the sink you see the soft shift between the two fields.
