About this work
Nzt - 1999 opens with a loose painted field and a few drawn marks that sit apart from the colour. The surface holds softer edges and sharper lines in the same view. Robert Goodnough made this kind of work by laying paint over paint and adding separate drawn notes.
The fine art print uses a matte finish that keeps the paint tones from going shiny. A light frame on a dark wall lets the drawn marks pull forward, while a wood frame beside wooden furniture ties the lines to the room. You see the marks best from the side of the room where the wall turns.
On a hallway wall after the stairs, the painted field reads first and the graphite notes come next. Under a steady ceiling light the edges stay flat and the paper keeps its even tone.
