About this work
Tales of Genji I - 1998 uses poured colour on a plain sheet. The paint soaks into the paper and leaves thin edges where the pigment thins out. Helen Frankenthaler worked in the soak stain style common to post war abstract painting.
The fine art print is mounted in a frame whose finish can match the room. A light frame sits on a dark wall, a dark frame on a pale wall, or a wood frame beside wooden furniture. The matte paper keeps the soft colour areas without shine under a lamp.
It hangs on the short wall in a study, set a little above the desk. From the chair you see the large colour shapes first. You notice the small changes in the wash where one tone fades into the next.
