About this work
Tales of Genji IV - 1998 by Helen Frankenthaler holds a wide field of thin colour laid across the sheet. Helen Frankenthaler worked with poured washes that soak into the paper and leave soft uneven edges. The composition rests on an open layout with quiet gaps between the painted areas.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte surface keeps the thin colour bands from shining under a lamp. The back panel holds the sheet flat against the wall.
It hangs well in a dining room beside the serving table. You notice the pale gaps between the colour fields first, then the slow spread of paint near the bottom edge.
