About this work
Tales of Genji VI - 1998 uses the soak stain technique Helen Frankenthaler is known for. Thin paint washes spread into the sheet and leave pale colour fields with soft edges. The work follows her post war abstract painting practice, where the sheet itself holds the stain.
The frame gives the picture a clear edge on the wall. It comes in white, wood, dark wood or black, and the finish sits against the washed colour without drawing attention away from it. This is a fine art print made in that way.
A dining room wall keeps the broad colour field at a distance. From the table you notice the pale washes and the way one stain fades into the next. The white frame keeps the whole image steady on the plaster.
