About this work
Untitled - 1963 holds two softly blurred colour bands stacked on the sheet. The upper field runs warmer and the lower field settles darker, with the edge between them hard to pin down. Mark Rothko built his later work by hovering rectangular forms over a ground, letting the colour breathe rather than sit flat.
The fine art print comes with a frame in white, wood, dark wood or black. A white frame keeps the painted bands open and pushes the darker lower field back. A dark wood frame gives the picture a firm edge that matches the weight of the lower band.
It works above the doorway of a narrow hallway, where the vertical shape leads the eye upward. You notice the blurred seam between the two fields first, then the quiet tone change as you pass under it.
