About this work
Untitled - 1996 by Robert Goodnough rests on a painted ground with separate marks laid over the surface. The broad colour shapes sit apart and the smaller drawn lines sit between them. The work belongs to the abstract expressionist painting practice of Robert Goodnough, where paint runs and pencil lines meet on the same sheet.
The picture arrives as a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte surface keeps the pale painted bands from shining under a lamp. You see the thin pencil marks only when you stand near the picture.
It fits on a hallway wall above the coat hooks. From the landing you notice the big painted areas first, then the drawn lines as you pass by.
